Description

Seeds from my collection of Gymnocalycium ragonesei! These have been hand-pollinated by me from plants grown in my greenhouse.

Gymnocalycium ragoneseii is a relatively rare species that is available occasionally online. They grow in flat discs, and do their best when kept very dry in winter and allowed to retreat back to the soil. These are an ideal species for someone interested in learning to better “read” their plants rather than simply watering on a schedule, but they are also fairly forgiving of regular watering through summer months. They need to be kept dry in winter, when temperatures at night are below 50F.

Usually grows as a single head, vaguely globe-shaped but more like a disc. Blooms through mid to late summer.

Slow growing and thrives with some abuse. Enjoys very hot weather and should be kept very bright, but protected from direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day.

Tolerant of cold weather, and can take drops to the low 20s or even high teens if kept very dry. Protect from frost, but in a sheltered area (as I keep mine in my greenhouse), they are pretty unfazed by brief periods of air temperatures below freezing.
